Certified vs. Muslim-friendly

Two labels matter. Halal-certified venues are audited by a halal authority. Muslim-friendly ones will remove pork and alcohol on request but aren't formally certified. Both can be great; choose by how strict you keep.

Tokyo's standout halal tables

Asakusa Sushi Ken, steps from Senso-ji, is Japan's first halal-certified sushi house — even the soy sauce is halal, and there's a prayer room upstairs. Gyumon in Shibuya grills A5 halal-certified wagyu over charcoal in a wooden folk house. Honolu near Shinjuku Gyoen builds a tonkotsu-rich paitan from certified halal chicken — no pork, no alcohol. For a plant-forward option that also welcomes Muslim diners, SAIDO is outstanding.

The Japanese-specific traps

Watch the seasoning: mirin and cooking sake (alcohol) flavour countless dishes, regular soy sauce is brewed with a little alcohol, and pork hides in broths, gyoza and shared fryers. Our halal explainer lists exactly what to ask, with phrases to show staff.

FAQ

Is there alcohol in Japanese food even without drinks?
Often yes — mirin and cooking sake are common seasonings, and soy sauce/miso can contain trace alcohol. Ask, or choose certified venues.
